The Bury Years.

FRENTIC THREE DAYS FOR THE SHAKERS- TUESDAY MARCH 12TH, 2002- BURY TIMES- PAGE 37

With all factions now supposedly putting their differences to one side a Save Our Shakers committee was formed by Mr.Neville with BASE receiving no representation but being informed of what wa taking place so that we could then use our 'manpower' to join in with the efforts to address their debt.. I used my connections in the National Federation of Supporters Clubs to get hold of the 'Fans United' scarf- which comprised of a scarf from every one of the Football Leagues 92 clubs all joined together . I then co-ordinated it being passed around the Cemi-end of the ground with me on the pitch behind the goals-this being in our home game versus Notts County. Incidentally-the illegal actions of BFCSA in removing me had also had the knock on effect of me being suspended from my newly appointed role as a North West regional spokesperson for the National Federation of Football Supporters Clubs.- Although to be honest- I had happily handed my role over to Mark Longden of IMUSA (Independent Manchester United Supporters Association) because not only was he a knowledgeable and worthy person for the job it also freed up me to solely focus on the task of trying to address the many issues at my own club.. THE FINALE resulted in fans raising enough monies to satisfy the debtors through the administration process. Mr.Neville who then staked claim to 'claim the glory' had in fact screwed the individuals and companies who through good faith had allowed Bury FC to have credit and run up debts to them that in most cases ran into thousands of pounds.. Through Mr. Nevilles actions- they were now to only receive a small fraction of what they were owed. Having put the boot into them Mr. Neville hadn't finished.. he then called a meeting with his solicitors and other members of the Save Our Shakers committee and amongst others this included unelected BASE members who he claimed had approved his actions in him then taking the excess monies 'left over' from clearing the debt-then used the said monies donated by fans to re-take control of the club..-with no representation from any registered or official fans groups such as ourselves included.. Not long after- I walked away- having done enough and seen enough. In my 29 years of following Bury FC, I like many fans during that time had experienced the highs and the lows and the joys and disappointments that came with the territory. The emergence of new young players that would then be sold on- often for a fraction of what they were worth or went onto become worth. The frustrations of building a team that was progressing up the league-only for star players to be poached and depart for pastures greener. The thrills of Cup runs which would see us beat teams in higher Divisions. The massive highs of simply winning games and seeing great entertaining performances in the process. I had been prepared to invest all my savings and investments I had at that time as part of my bid with BASE and the sums I had personally pledged would of seen me cashing in all I had to realise a sum of around £25,000- a figure that only major shareholder Hugh Eaves had put more in as part of the present Board of Directors- the rest had invested nowhere near that amount- in fact Mr. Neville only had a £1,000 of shares for his Directorship.. But it was all about nepotism at Bury FC. All about dinosaurs with old ideas who just wanted to ride a gravy train that saw nothing innovative and never sought to rock any boat.. Jobs for the boys and for friends and families. I in the period of 1974-2003 visited 88 of the 92 Football League grounds . I saw Bury play over 500 times at home and over 300 times away. I also saw around another 100 or so games watching other clubs in games not including Bury. Unlike the parasites riding the Bury FC gravy train. I paid my way. What followed after. More of the same- the only surprise being that it took as long as it finally did for the club to be run into the ground and not saved and finally expelled from the Football League due to its financial irregularities. Mr.Neville being part of the 'next' board was again to see it run that much into debt that they again came close to having to call in the administrators and the next part was 'absolute genius'.(sic) Mr. Neville then called in a businessman who was a property investor and had no connection to the club. A person who Port Vale fans had rejected after his involvement attempt there and somebody who had been quoted as being either an Arsenal fan or a Huddersfield Town fan depending on where you read.. The ground again was placed into the hands of such person- the 7 years previous -from the time I walked away to 2010 when the new situation was now there- having seen supporters raising money to clear off that previous debt to get the mortgage on the ground cleared from the Robinson era and it be owned again once more-as through the previous 100 hundred years plus-by the Club itself.

My all-time highlights since watching Bury include- the first time I visited Gigg Lane as a 7 year old back in October 1974 and was left in awe as I sat in the Main Stand with my Dad and saw my very first game against Plymouth Argyle in the old 3rd Division.
The League Cup run of 1977-78 saw us reach the last 8 having beaten First Division W.B.A. 1-0 in round 4 and finally losing at a packed out Gigg to the amazing Nottingham Forest team under legendary Brian Clough. Forest went on to win the League Cup and First Division that season and the European Cup the following season.

The FA Cup run in 1979/80 that saw us reach the last 16 of the competition. Having won away to Burton Albion of the non league- beat York City and Rochdale after replays. Beat Burnley 1-0 in Round 4 when they were a Divison above us. The climax of this run coming at Anfield as we held European Champions Liverpool until the 64th minute before 'super-sub' David Fairclough scored his first of two goals as we eventually lost 2-0 .

Bouncing in the cemi-end throughout the 1980's as I came of age and joined a mob of mates who were addicted to following Bury every week, just like me.

Promotion in 1985 from Division 4 with Manager Martin Dobson using just 15 players throughout the whole season.

1987-88 In the League Cup saw us beat higher Division opponents Sheff. Utd of Division 2 over 2 legs and then dispatch of Division 1 Q.P.R. at home 1-0.Round 4 we had a home tie versus Manchester United & switched it to Old Trafford to cash in. Battling performance saw us take the lead through a Jamie Hoyland goal after 52mins. Whiteside equalised after 64 mins and McClair got their winner at 68 mins in front of a 33,519 attendance.

Back to back promotions in the Stan Ternent era in 1996 and 97 including a 3RD tier title and the best Shakers team I've ever seen. Avoiding relegation in 98 as we enter the 2nd tier for the first time in 30 years- the 1-0 victory we achieved at Maine Road versus Manchester City on Valentines Day was the ultimate. Beating Birmingham City 3-1 at St.Andrews when already having beaten them 2-1 at Gigg to complete the league double of victories against them that season. An earlier victory 2-0 against former European Champions Nottingham Forest also being up there with the best. As was the 1-0 win at home to Norwich City and vital last day away win 1-0 against Queens Park Rangers.

The following season that started so well and saw us sitting 3rd after 5 games and 4th after 9 games- was of course to end in disaster as Wanker Warnock who inherited the best post-war squad in our History then preceded to dismantle it and bring in his old boys and promptly relegate us with some of the most negative football I've ever seen. My last game was the Play0ff Semi v Bournemouth at Gigg ending 0-0 in May 2003 (we lost the 2nd leg 3-1.)

After 30 seasons I had seen enough. I even stopped following any football for the next 7 years

More of the same with other 'fuck ups' was also to follow. With Jill Neville continuing as Club Secretary the club was to be thrown out of the FA Cup for fielding an ineligible player and then do similar again resulting in points being docked.

And then finally.. Stewart Day runs up massive debts to the tune of over 7 million pounds- sells the club for £1 to the father in law of a Director of one of the companies who the largest debt is incurred with. players don't get paid for months.. the Football League say 'enough is enough' and expel the club from the Football League- the usual takes place-the ones with the emotional investment who love the club-the fans-they are the ones who really get hurt..-like I said- I MADE THE RIGHT DECISION IN WALKING AWAY -ESPECIALLY KNOWING I DID ALL I COULD IN THE TIME I WAS ACTIVELY INVOLVED

HOWEVER-AT the time of writing-June,2022- A new hope has emerged.
BURY AFC-By the Fans- For the Fans- and established by people that did include former BASE members- was set up and has just successfully completed its first full season in North West Counties Division One North and finished as CHAMPIONS! - Needing just 5 more promotions now to get back into the Football League. As BASE had talked about and I myself had been the first to introduce the idea of fans run clubs after consultations with the Nat Fed and Supporters Direct that had made up the foundations of our bid back in 2002- FINALLY A FANS RUN CLUB is proving that with volunteers you can cut out the nepotism and un-necessary burden of a wage bill for staff members off the field. ONE SHARE ONE VOTE- THE MODEL THAT WE TALKED ABOUT AND TRIED TO IMPLEMENT ALL THEM YEARS AGO IS NOW FINALLY PREVAILING. HOW LONG THAT WILL CONTINUE WILL DEPEND ON WHETHER THOSE AT BURY AFC CONTINUE TO STICK TO THEIR PRINCIPLES- OR IF THE MEMEBERSHIP FALLS FOR THE SAME OLD ''TRUST US, WE KNOW BEST'' OUT OF DATE MODEL THAT SEES OLD FASHIONED DIRECTORS DECIDING WHAT HAPPENS AND REDUCING THE CAPACITY OF FANS TO HAVE A SAY IN HOW THEIR FOOTBALL CLUB IS RUN.
